First Full Moon of May

"For I perceived that man's estate is as a citadel: he may throw down the walls to gain what he calls freedom, but then nothing of him remains save a dismantled fortress, open to the stars."

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Today is the first full moon of the two full moons of this years’  May. The second May full moon will be on Sunday, May 31, which is my art show. Thus begins the final cycle for something I have been getting ready for for a long time and am equal parts nervous and exhilarated about.

Two Moons

This painting hangs in a house far away and each time I see it I forget that I ever made it. This allows me to encounter it as a viewer.  I appreciate many of the things about it, even though I recall the symbolic meaning and the intentions beyond the different parts I get to have a new conversation with it, as an outsider.. The thing in the middle must be the  moon.  I see a tunnel, an escape, ins and outs and the protochicken taking it all in. It’s also strange because a long time has passed since I made this and I can not and will not make work like this again. The thing they tell you about the creative process is true - every artwork is a product of its unique moment in  time, and can never be replicated. The artist forgets,  and the forces that come together to make creation possible are long gone.

Wolf Howling at the Moon.

Wolf Howling at the Moon. Work in progress.

The moon and the wolf howl at each other over the abyss.. The two ends of life filled with unbearable longing from which comes beauty and hope.

So Be It.
